Vaiko Seeks VS Support for Stir against Neutrino Project

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM:Giving a fillip to the agitation against the Neutrino project at Theni on the Kerala-Tamil Nadu border, Opposition leader V S Achuthanandan on Saturday offered all support and cooperation to the agitation being launched by MDMK leader Vaiko. VS offered his support when Vaiko called on him at the Aluva Palace on Saturday morning, sources in the Opposition Leader’s office here said.

Vaiko had met Chief Minister Oommen Chandy last week seeking his support on the issue. VS and Vaiko shared the apprehension about the Union Government’s move to go ahead with the  project. Vaiko alleged that in the name of the Neutrino project there were plans to dump the nuclear waste deep inside the tunnel being dug in the bedrock near the Neutrino project site.

Asked about the style of agitation, Vaiko said in the first phase he would be focussing on generating an awareness about the impact of such a project on the heavily populated states of Tamil Nadu and Kerala.

He said that VS also had stated that the project should be opposed at any cost.

Referring to his meeting with Chief Minister Oommen Chandy in this regard last week, Vaiko said that the Chief Minister also offered all assistance. He revealed that Chandy also had asked him to meet the Opposition leader as it was VS who protested against the project first. “Though Chandy and VS are always at loggerheads on various issues, they are on the same side in building resistance against the Neutrino project,” Vaiko said.

He said that the Chief Minister was positive to the cause and expressed solidarity with the move against the project. He met the Chief Minister at Nedumbassery airport last week.Vaiko revealed that on both occasions he came to Kerala exclusively to meet the Chief Minister and Opposition Leader.
