PALAKKAD: With the widening rift in the relationship of Congress (B) leader Balakrishna Pillai with the UDF front, there is widespread opinion that the report framed by the subcommittee, headed by Balakrishna Pillai, on the possible reasons behind the defeat of Socialist Janata (Democratic) [SJ (D)] state president M P Veerendrakumar in the Lok Sabha elections here, has been sabotaged.
Political analysts opine that the report will be a setback to the Congress because of the content it embodies. It is learnt that the report states that the defeat of Veerendrakumar was the result of a deliberate conspiracy of various Congress leaders and the serious lapses in the Congress party. The report also blames the DCC President and other Congress leaders including various MLAs for their failure and demands action to prevent such incidents. It is also reported that there was misappropriation of election funds.
In the report, Congress leaders like C V Balachandran and C Chandran are derided and remarked as utter failures in the election. The sub-committee was chaired by R Balakrishna Pillai with members UDF convener P P Thankachan, SJ (D) leader Sheik P Harris, Kerala Congress (M) leader Joy Abraham, KPA Majeed, Kerala Congress (Jacob) leader Johnny Neloor and A A Azeez.
When contacted Balakrishna Pillai he hinted at the possibility that the report is sabotaged due to political upheaval it may cause. “I have no clue about the present status of the report as the UDF front has not been inviting me for any of the meetings. The report was framed by me and it is based on facts and evidence that I prepared the report. Being a political leader who always sticks to principles and ethics of the UDF front, I don’t want to reveal the contents of the report,” said Balakrishna Pillai.
He said that,”The decision of the UDF front not to invite me for the UDF meeting on the basis of a conversation with Biju Ramesh was unfair and I don’t regret it. Being a member of the UDF front, P C George has been talking against the front, but he or his party have not been barred from attending UDF meetings. I am born in a community that is considered lowly by them and I was denied various promises given by the UDF front. Let them first keep the promises given to me then I will think of upholding the dignity of the UDF front,” added Balakrishna Pillai.
He said he will not disclose any of the points in the report, but will not be hesitant to do so if situation demands it. The committee had held sittings at Ottappalam, Mannarkkad and Attappadi and evidence had been collected from five MLAs, recorded statements from Veerendrakumar and other senior leaders of SJ(D). Dr P S Panicker, a political analyst, said there was a high-level conspiracy involved in inviting Veerendrakumar to Palakkad and it was a sure seat for UDF. “But by working with vested interests, party dignitaries betrayed Veerendrakumar,” said Panicker.
