CPM Panel Favours Re-entry of JD(U)

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM:The two-day meeting of the CPM state committee began here on Tuesday.

One of the major topics of discussion in the meeting was the broadening of the LDF base as per the political resolution adopted at the 20th party congress held in Visakhapatnam and the state conference held in Alapuzha in February. It is learnt that the meeting has decided to consider the re-entry of JD(U) in the event of the party approaching the LDF.

The meeting to be continued on Wednesday is likely to take up the issue with efforts going on to rope in more UDF constituents to the LDF fold. The issue of inducting KC(B) led by R Balakrishna Pillai and the CPM state secretary Kodiyeri Balakrishnan’s visit to JD(U) leader M P Veerendarakumar’s office and the latter sharing the platform with Kodiyeri the other day may also figure in the discussions.

It is expected that the newly-constituted state secretariat members will be allotted their responsibilities in the meeting.

Considering upcoming Aruvikkara by- election and local body elections, the state panel of the CPM is likely to chalk out the action plan for the days to come. However, there is a strong view that the by-election might not be held as there was just one year left for the tenure of the 13th Assembly to end.

Similarly, the contest held in the selection of the state secretariat members will come for discussion as there is a view that such a contest marked the revival of groupism which the CPM leadership has been claiming a ‘thing of the past.’

Appointing a new Opposition deputy leader in place of Kodiyeri Balakrishnan also has to be decided in the meeting in the wake of Kodiyeri’s elevation to the state secretary’s post.

The May 24 pre-monsoon cleaning drive is another important issue to be discussed in detail. The campaign is being held at the area committee level.
