Zero-waste Project Launch on June 5

KOTTAYAM: The Zero-waste project, being implemented in the district under the aegis of district administration to address the garbage menace, will be launched on World Environment Day on June 5. School students will collect plastic covers in their schools on June 5 as part of the zero-waste campaigning, which will be implemented in association with the local self-government institutions.

A meeting held here the other day finalised the activities to be taken out under the project, which include launching a campaign with the slogan ‘join hands for cleanliness’ among the school students across the district.

The cleaned and dried plastic covers being collected by the students will be brought to the headquarters of respective block    panchayats with the help of grama panchayat authorities. This will be later collected by Clean Kerala Company, which has been formed in order to undertake the waste management issues in the state.

Speaking on the occasion District Collector U V Jose said that awareness campaigns among children is essential to build up waste disposal a part of the culture. He added that competition programmes will also be organised as part of the project and guidelines in this regard would be given to school managements soon.

Presiding over the function, district panchayat president Nirmala Jimmy said that all the LSG institutions will earmark necessary fund for the project.

According to the authorities, steps will be initiated to process the bio-waste, being generated at schools and households, at its sources itself.  “Localised small treatment plants will be set up in places, where bio-wastes cannot be processed at the source. Moreover, technical assistance will also be sought from Tropical Institute of Ecological Sciences (TIES), Kottayam for waste collection and management,” they said.

Logo Designing Competition

The district administration has arranged a competition for logo designing for the zero waste campaigning.  Logos, along with the name of the candidates, can be uploaded to the Facebook page of the District Collector (https://www.facebook.com/collectorkottayam). Slogans, pictures, cartoons, and poems can also be uploaded and the best work will be given prizes.
