High Tide, Sea Receding Trigger Panic in Alappuzha

ALAPPUZHA:  Strong tidal waves and receding of sea caused panic among hundreds living at the coastal areas of the district. More than 700 houses were flooded in the phenomenon.

The high tidal waves started hitting the shores around 1 am on Tuesday. Locals registered strong protest against the district administration alleging that lack of a strong sea wall led to flooding. Ambalappuzha tehsildar Sunilkumar said they have started clearing the water-logging.

The sea receded by about 250 metres from the shoreline at Challi, near Punnapra. Sea erosion and receding were reported at Purackadu and Challi three years ago.
