IDUKKI: The Adimaly Police arrested Saleena, mother of nine-year-old Noufal who was brutally tortured allegedly by his parents, in Adimaly here on Friday morning. She was later remanded in 14 days’ custody by the Devikulam Magistrate Court and was sent to Viyyur Women’s Jail along with her three-month-old baby.

The arrest of Saleena, who was brought to the Adimaly Police Station from a shelter home at Painavu here where she was temporarily lodged with her other two children including the baby girl by the Idukki district Child Welfare Committee on the other day, was marked by the police at 10 am.

The police had charged Saleena(30) and Nazeer (31) of Pazhampilliyil House, father of Noufal who is currently in Devikulam sub jail in a ganja case, with non bailable offences two days ago. However, the arrest of the duo was delayed owing to some practical difficulties in separating the three-month old baby from Saleena and technicalities involved in handing over the custody of Nazeer to the police as he is in remand in another case.

The couple was charged with IPC Sections 324 (voluntarily causing hurt by dangerous weapons or means), Sections 326 B (voluntarily causing grievous hurt by use of acid etc), Section 341 (punishment wrongful restraint) and Section 75 of the Juvenile Justice (Care and Protection of Children) Act, 2015 (punishment for cruelty to child).

Adimaly SI Lal C Baby told ‘Express’ that they are awaiting sanction from the Devikulam Magistrate Court for the arrest of Nazeer which they expect to get only by Monday. “The Devikulam Magistrate will not be in charge tomorrow. So the sanction to arrest Nazeer will be getting only by Monday now,” he said.

Noufal was found with injuries on his face and all over his body inside his home by an auto driver who with the help of other drivers and some local residents took the boy to Adimaly Taluk Hospital which referred him to the Hospital for Children and Women in Kottayam.

Later, he was transferred to the Government Medical College at Kalamassery in Ernakulam.
