Homeless but not penniless after all!

THRISSUR: It was seemingly out of the blue a quarter of a century ago that the elderly looking woman aged around 55 emerged on the streets of Vadanappally. Despite the locals knowing next to nothing about her identity or place of origin, the lady’s ubiquitous presence bred a sense of familiarity which got her the sobriquet of ‘Deedi’.

But on Friday, the local community was in for a major surprise when some of the people, who were to trying to help out Deedi, found that there was over `1lakh in the sack that she carried with her.

Actually, it took the police personnel, local political leaders and social workers the better part of two hours to count out the cash in Deedi’s possession, which totalled `1,11,733. Interestingly, it also included  200 dirhams(UAD).

In fact, it was a chance discovery which happened while efforts were being made to shift Deedi to hospital so as to ensure safe accommodation for her. Vadanappally Police said she displayed signs of mental illness and people had tried to get her admiitted to hospital. “But she did not get moving till the sack was safely placed inside the vehicle,” police said.
