KOZHIKODE: Kozhikode: Cuban Communist revolutionary Fidel Castro has a huge fan base among the autorickshaw drivers in the city. Paying homage to the late revolutionary icon, a section of auto drivers in the city have displayed images of Fidel on their vehicles.

Some of them have been carrying image of the Cuban leader on their autorickshaws even before his death. Secretary of City Auto Committee Yasar Arafath said “the Cuban revolutionary icon has helped shape the destinies of millions of people across the globe. He has been a source of inspiration for the driver’s fraternity in Kozhikode as well.”  Another auto driver, Shamseer K P, hailing from Cherukulam, has been a die-hard fan of the Cuban leader from his teenage years.

“A champion, his socialist ideology and writings have significantly influenced me and many people of my generation,” said Shamseer. It was only two weeks before that he bought his new auto and displayed the image of his revolutionary icon on it. T Babu who has been steering an autorickshaw on city roads for the past 42 years says, “I haven’t read any of his books but learnt him as a symbol of revolutionary virtues and sacrifices from the party classes.” “We are lucky to live in such an era where he lived. The future will remember him as someone who taught to fight against the odds and as a man who gave his life for the well-being of others,” said driver Sasidharan Palaarl.
