Pembillai Orumai to Contest in Peermade, Devikulam Segments

KOCHI: Pembillai Orumai, the trade union floated by the collective of women tea estate workers of Munnar, will field candidates in Devikulam and Peermade Assembly constituencies in a bid to address the issues being faced by the workers in the plantation sector.

Addressing a press conference here on Thursday, Pembillai Orumai president Lissy Sunny said the names of the candidates will be finalised later. “The Pembillai Orumai has been given registration under Trade Union Act and a policy declaration conference of the union will be held at Munnar on March 13,” she added.“As the agitation held by the Orumai turned out to be a success in Munnar earlier, the main stream trade unions have been attempting to eliminate the collective. In this circumstance we have decided to filed candidates,” said Lissy.  Activists Sarah Joseph, C K Janu and Kerala State Women’s Commission member Lissy Jose will take part in the programme to be held at Munnar in which veteran estate workers would be honoured.
