IDUKKI: In a tragic incident, a 12-year-old girl died after a long scarf she had tied around her neck tightened while she was playing at her residence in Vandiperiyar. Jayalakshmi, daughter of Divya and Jayan of Periyar Kannimara Estate in Vandiperiyar, was playing with her brother Ambili and two cousins by using the long scarf as a swing Sunday night.

When her grandmother did not see her even as the other children went to sleep, she went looking and found her hanging from the window. She was rushed to Periyar PHC with the help of neighbours, but was declared dead on arrival.

Following post-mortem at Kottayam Medical College Hospital, her body was cremated at her native place. Jayalakshmi’s parents are employed in the Gulf and she was staying here with her paternal grandmother. She was a Class 7 student at St Martin’s UP School in Vandiperiyar.
