In the backdrop of political murders making a comeback in Kannur, ‘Express’ delves deep into the dark underbelly of the planning and political agenda behind a few of the major murders in the district and how small hamlets of the district became forts for both the CPM and the BJP.

THALASSERY: Much blood has already been shed and it still continues to ooze in various hamlets of Kannur with the RSS and the CPM declaring an open war against each other in their fight to retain supremacy in the district since the 1960s.

As murder count on both sides has almost tallied with 85 each (unofficial figures), Express talks to a couple of people (which included a few who were with the state police machinery serving tenure in Kannur during the bloody days) to find out what triggers these murders, the nerve centres, whether any detailed planning goes into it and on what basis the opponent parties select their preys.

While detailing out, those who spoke unanimously said that the bloody violence of Kannur would come to an end only if the parties disown these vengeance murders and stop supporting those who commit it.
Though there were violent skirmishes between the RSS and the CPM right from the early 1960s, the situation became worse after the murder of Vadikkal Ramakrishnan, Mukhya Shikshak of RSS on April 28, 1969, and assassination of CPM leader Ettuveetil Raju Master, a teacher of Kannampally Lower Primary School in Panur on October 26, 1978.

Raju Master was the East Chemmbad branch secretary and one of the prominent leaders of Panniyannur.
Since these murders, both the CPM and the RSS have been taking on each other-nail for a nail and teeth for a teeth.

Police sources, privy to the investigation in many of the murder cases, said that while a few of the murders were planned in detail and executed with the know of the senior party leaders, majority of them were the result of knee-jerk reaction of the local party units which select their preys with a vengeance to give fitting reply to local political opponents.

More than political or ideological hatred, the workers of the CPM and the RSS take on each other to satiate their hysteric vengeance. Even in the case of latest BJP worker Ramith’s murder, sources say that there was a hidden tale to it.
