MALAPPURAM: A one-year-old girl had to receive nearly 10 stitches to her face after being mauled by a stray dog at her home in Chemmankadav, near here, on Saturday.

Isha, daughter of Riyas Pattrakadav, was playing in her house when the dog, roaming about the area in packs, came out of the group and attacked her. She was admitted to the Medical College Hospital, Manjeri, and put under observation.

The mother, who had to throw a chair at the canine to rescue the child from its jaws, said the fiendish animal attacked her daughter without any provocation from her child.

“I saw pack of dogs wandering around the area in the morning. I put my child inside the house fearing the attack. Somehow the dog managed to get into the house and jumped on her, biting multiple times,” the mother said.

Isha was covered in blood and screaming when the dog dragged her away from the house to a bush nearby, treating her like mouse, the mother said. She had cuts all over her body, especially on the head and neck.

“I was busy with my chore when I heard her cry for help. I was horrified to see her being brutally mauled by the dog. When I chased the dog away and picked her up, blood was dripping from the deep cuts left by the horrific attack,” she said.

The mother said that her daughter would have died from dog bites if she were not there at the time of the incident. The area has been infested with the dogs that feed on waste piled up on roadside, she said.
