KOCHI: A-29-year-old short film director-cum-freelance photographer was found dead with his throat slit in a lodge room at Kothamangalam late Thursday night. His friend, who allegedly murdered him, surrendered before the Kothamangalam police Friday morning. The deceased is Jayan of Kombanad, Perumbavoor. His friend Joby, 28, of Perumbavoor has surrendered.

“Jayan and Joby, who ran a studio in Kothamangalam, had been friends for the last several years. On the fateful day the two had liquor in Jayan’s room in the lodge. It is suspected Joby murdered Jayan following a brawl. He then informed one of his friends who is being interrogated. Joby had told his friend that Jayan cheated him. We suspect sudden provocation led to the murder,” said K Bijumon, DySP, Muvattupuzha. The cops have recovered Jayan’s mobile phone and the knife which was apparently used for the crime.

“Jayan was a freelance photographer who also directed some short films. Despite being married, he lived alone at the lodge near the Kothamangalam private bus station for the past one year. Joby frequently visited Jayan and the two consumed liquor together on most days,” police officers with the Kothamangalam police station said.Others staying at the lodge reported of hearing a loud noise from Jayan’s room on Thursday evening. Joby arrived at the room at night.

“After the murder, the accused slept in the same room and left by morning. Following the advice of another friend, he surrendered,” a police official said. The cops completed the inquest proceedings on Friday evening and shifted the body to a nearby government hospital for postmortem. “The accused will be produced before the Magistrate Court on Saturday. We will seek his custody soon,” Bijumon said. The cops said Joby was involved in various assaults and a case of domestic violence was also registered against him.
