THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: Harping on his early stance, Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan on Tuesday said the government has done everything possible in the Jishnu Pranoy case. At a Cabinet briefing on Tuesday, Pinarayi termed the DGP Office incident as ‘something that shouldn’t have happened’.

However, he didn’t hide his discontent over the strike by Mahija and others. “Was there any need for such a strike? What did they gain from it? The government can say without a shadow of doubt we have done everything possible in the issue,” he said.

In an apparent reference to the Opposition and the Socialist Unity Centre of India (SUCI) activists, who took part in the strike, Pinarayi said some people exploited Mahija’s situation to make political gains.
“The government fully comprehends the mental state of a mother who lost her son. But some people were making political gains out of it. We couldn’t let it happen. But my intervention alone wouldn’t have ended the strike,” he said.

“The incident shouldn’t have happened in the first place. It’s painful,” Pinarayi said. Stating the police needed to look into the conspiracy angle, he said he can’t comment on Jishnu’s uncle Sreejith’s role in the issue.

Expressing his unhappiness over SUCI taking up the issue, he said when the SUCI activists went to jail, they had given their phone to Sreejith. This revelation forced Sreejith to admit he had contacted them, Pinarayi said.

“If Mahija’s was a party family, how could the SUCI influence them?” Pinarayi asked, saying it’ll be verified whether SUCI had any other intention in the issue.

‘Kanam played no role to end stir’
CPI state secretary Kanam Rajendran played no role in resolving the hunger strike by Jishnu’s family, said Pinarayi.

“Kanam hasn’t called me in this regard. He met Jishnu’s mother Mahija and relatives on Sunday. He also spoke with CPM state secretary Kodiyeri Balakrishnan over phone regarding the issue,” he said.
Pinarayi also said there was no intervention from the part of party central leadership in resolving the issue.
