THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: Kerala State Commission for Women will register a case against MLA PC George for allegedly making defamatory remarks against the Malayalam actress who was abducted in February this year.

The Commission, in a press release, said that the MLA's remarks, made during interviews with television channels, were an affront to the dignity of a woman. The Commission's Legal officer and Standing Counsel green-lighted the proposal to pursue legal recourse against the MLA.

Chairperson of the commission, MC Josephine, has asked its director VU Kuriakose to record the statements of the MLA, after obtaining the Speaker's permission.

The commission observed that there has been a reluctance on the part of the victims of assault to file a complaint. There are also instances when the victims were pressurized to withdraw cases, the Commission noted.

Under the Women's Commission Act, the Commission can initiate suo- motu action in cases involving attacks against women.

She said when powerful people in the society attacked the modesty of a woman, the law should not remain a mute witness.
