KOCHI: A chill ran down Riyas Khan’s spine when a friend’s call came on his mobile phone around 6 pm on Sunday.

The caller said Riyas’ picture was being circulated in social media as ‘Pulsar Suni,’ the key accused in the case related to the assault of a popular actor.

“To my shock, the photo being shared was the one I had posted around 3 pm on my Facebook page,” said the 33-year-old who hails from Ambalathara in Thiruvananthapuram.

“I was attending a meeting of the Dileep Fans and Welfare Association in Alappuzha on Sunday, since morning. After the meeting, I posted my photo along with the new members of the district committee on Facebook. The call came when I was shopping in Kochi with friends,” said Riyas who is chairman of the association.   “I got scared when I came to know that my photo was being linked to a criminal’s name and circulated on social media. What if I was assaulted by the public, due to the mistaken identity?” asks Riyas who works in films and advertisements.

By Monday evening, there was an attempt by  a section to propagate that Sunil’s original name was Riyas Khan, which came as an ‘advice to the media.’

Though Riyas filed a complaint with the Cyber Cell and the Thiruvananthapuram Police Commissioner, messages with his photo  highlighted in red circle and titled ‘pulsar Suni with actor Dileep’ continued to flood the social media.

“First, the news appeared in a Malayalam portal based in Kochi. Then, the news spread rapidly and started appearing in a number of online portals. My parents, sister and brother are really worried about the probable consequences of this heinous act. Many find it difficult to differentiate between me and the accused. The most painful part is that even the editor of a frontline newspaper posted the photo on his Facebook wall,” he said.

Riyas, who has been heading the fans association for the last 12 years, said it was an attempt to malign Dileep.

“I don’t think it is a personal attack on me. I am being targeted because Dileep’s name has been associated with my name for some time. The conspiracy behind the act should be revealed,” he said.
