KOCHI: Five days after a leading Malayalam actress was abducted and molested in her car by a gang of seven, Kerala has decided to set up a registry of sex offenders. It will contain the names and details of people who commit crimes against and will be kept in the public domain.
A registry of sex offenders would enable employers in profiling their prospective employees and law enforcement agencies to keep an eye on offenders’ activities.
The announcement was included in the second policy statement of the LDF government released by Governor P Sathasivam on Thursday.
The policy statement listed detailed measures to check crime. Among them are a move to create a separate department exclusively for women.
"There will be a lady police officer in each panchayat. We created a women battalion last year. Now we will increase the number of women in the police force to 15 per cent." said Sathasivam.
