Murder of RSS functionary: Governor summons CM, DGP to Raj Bhavan

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: In an unprecedented move, Governor P Sathasivam summoned Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan and DGP Loknath Behera to the Raj Bhavan on Sunday to convey his concerns regarding the politically volatile situation prevailing in the capital city following the brutal murder of RSS functionary Rajesh.

A statement from the Raj Bhavan said the Governor summoned the Chief Minister to “get first-hand information regarding the incidents and the steps taken.”

The statement said Pinarayi told the Governor the main culprits behind the crime had already been arrested. “The Chief Minister said he proposes to meet state BJP president Kummanam Rajasekharan and the state RSS chief after which he will appeal to the public to maintain peace,” the statement said.

“The Chief Minister informed the Governor the lawbreakers will be sternly dealt with irrespective of their status or political affiliation,” the statement  said. Sathasivam told DGP Loknath Behera to take all possible measures to book the culprits and maintain peace. Behera briefed Sathasivam on the arrests made on Sunday morning and the action taken to maintain law and order in the state.

Later, the Governor also spoke to BJP state president Kummanam Rajasekharan about the political murder and the attack on the BJP party office in Thiruvananthapuram a couple of days ago. He promised measures were being taken to ensure peace. Sathasivam also spoke to CPM state secretary Kodiyeri Balakrishnan over phone and inquired about the stone pelting at his son’s residence.

The Governor also apprised Union Home Minister Rajnath Singh of the law and order situation and measures taken to contain the violence.

Meanwhile, the Chief Minister’s Office claimed in a Facebook post the Union Home Minister had expressed satisfaction over the arrest of the accused persons within hours of the murder of Rajesh.

Political violence unacceptable in democracy: Rajnath Singh

Union Home Minister Rajnath Singh on Sunday said political violence was unacceptable in a democracy.  He said he expected political violence in the state would be curbed and the perpetrators arrested.

Nine arrested for murder

The special investigating team (SIT) on Sunday arrested nine persons in connection with the murder of Rajesh at Sreekariyam on Saturday. The arrest was recorded after hours of interrogation by Thiruvananthapuram Range I G Manoj Abraham.
