Locals miffed by lackadaisical attitude of police in investigating death of 10-year-old girl

The girl was found hanging from the window of her house two months ago and a suicide note found near her body stated, 'Family issues pushed me to take the extreme step'.

KOLLAM: In yet another incident of the lackadaisical attitude of the police department, the locals of Kundara in Kollam alleged indolence in the investigation of the suicide of 10-year-old girl, here.

The girl was found hanging from the window of her house two months ago and a suicide note found near her body stated, “Family issues pushed me to take the extreme step”.

Kundara CI R Shabu was suspended by Thiruvananthapuram Range IG Manoj Abraham on Wednesday following protests staged by political parties including CPM and its youth faction DYFI at Kundara Police Station.

The family has come out with the allegation that the police investigation lacks sincerity, as it is not considering the post-mortem report and the 'mystery' behind the ‘suicide note’.

“The claims of police into investigation are hollow. They were groping in the dark, even after two months of the death. The postmortem report confirms sexual harassment and spotted 22 injuries in her body. Also, the police is yet to confirm the authenticity of the suicide note. This is a clear case of dereliction,” said a family member.

Meanwhile, Kundara CI R Shabu said as the sexual harassment was confirmed, a case under POSCO has been charged and the investigation is progressing.

“For the past two years, the girl was under the custody of her mother. When we started the investigation, her mother ruled out any angle of sexual harassment. We have the statements from the family members, her classmates, teachers and others. Some leads are there and the investigation is progressing,” said Shabu.

The police is said to have taken a person into custody.
