Kerala woman gets life term for killing her newborn twins

The Idukki district court on Friday has awarded lifetime imprisonment to a woman who allegedly killed her newborn twins in her house at Mottakkunnu.

IDUKKI: The Idukki district court on Friday has awarded lifetime imprisonment to a woman who allegedly killed her newborn twins in her house at Mottakkunnu near Kolahalamedu, Wagamon, and left their bodies in the bathroom.District sessions judge V G Anilkumar also imposed a fine of `25,000 on Vijeesha, the accused, on Friday.  

According to the prosecution, the incident happened on October 17, 2013. Vijeesha was living with her husband, Praveen, and their family for nearly nine months before they got married at a social marriage ceremony in Alappuzha. Vijeesha, who was nearly nine months pregnant at the time of their marriage, gave birth to twins that evening in a bathroom at Praveen’s home. Since his parents didn’t know Vijeesha was pregnant, she killed the newborn twins by slitting their throats with a knife.

The truth came to light when the doctors detected Vijeesha had given birth when she was admitted to the Kottayam Medical College Hospital for bleeding complaints. Praveen admitted to the prosecution Vijeesha was already pregnant and they hid it fearing social stigma.
