Brush up your language skills in just four months

From students in CBSE schools to bureaucrats, working professionals to homemakers, the Pachcha Malayalam course of the Literacy Mission has got wide acceptance from a cross-section of society.

KOZHIKODE: From students in CBSE schools to bureaucrats, working professionals to homemakers, the Pachcha Malayalam course of the Literacy Mission has got wide acceptance from a cross-section of society barely a couple of months after its launch.

With the government declaring Malayalam as the official language last year and making it a compulsory subject in all schools, a four-month certificate course was sure to be a raging hit.

“As many as 688 people have enrolled for the first batch of the course across the state. They include people from linguistic minorities and government servants. The second batch is all set to begin by June,” said Literacy Mission director P S Sreekala. The registration will close on May 10.

Along with Pachcha Malayalam, the Literacy Mission also offers four-month certificate courses in English and Hindi called Good English and Achchi Hindi.

While 996 people enrolled for the English course, the Hindi course attracted 334 learners. A majority of the people enrolling for the English course are Anganwadi teachers and last-grade employees in government offices. Homemakers have also come forward for the course, thanks to the convenient timings.
Any person who has completed Class VIII and has attained the age of 17 can enrol for any of the three courses. Students who are undergoing formal education from Class VIII to Plus Two can also join the course.

While the registration fee is Rs 500, the course fee is Rs 2,000. The registration fee will be waived for students from Class VIII to Plus Two and those who have already enrolled for Class X and Higher Secondary equivalency courses of the Literacy Mission. If at least 20 students from a school have registered for the certificate course, a learning centre for conducting contact classes will be arranged at the school itself.
