THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: The state police have constituted a special investigation team(SIT) to probe the case pertaining to the death of a tribal youth at Attappadi. Agali DySP T K Subramaniyan will probe the case under the supervision of Palakkad SP Pratheesh Kumar and IG (Thrissur Range) M R Ajithkumar. A Madhu, a 27-year-old tribal youth was beaten to death by a group of people at Kadukumanna tribal hamlet at Attappady in Palakkad district on Thursday evening.
The local people man-handled the youth using sticks for allegedly stealing valuables from a residence of a person three days ago. When he was taken into police jeep for admitting him into a nearby hospital, he eventually collapsed and died in the police jeep. DGP Loknath Behera in a statement condemned the incident and instructed the police team to take strong action against the culprits. Behera said all the persons involved in the incident will indeed be brought to justice.
“ Several instances of people taking the law into their hands have emerged in the state. It is a disturbing tendency. It is illegal and not suitable for a modern society. They should have informed the police rather than beating him( the victim in the Attappadi incident) up. Hence, the public should cooperate with the police force in dealing with the crimes,” he said.
Rights panel registers suo motu case
Kochi: The State Human Rights Commission has registered a suo motu case into the incident. The case has been registered based on the press reports which appeared on Friday. Commission member K Mohankumar directed the Palakkad District Collector and the police chief to submit a report after conducting a detailed probe into Madhu’s murder.The commission asked the Collector to inform the relief measures given to Madhu’s family. The commission will conduct a sitting at Palakkad on March 14.
