Rain fury in Kerala: Widespread damage in Kannur district

Trees were uprooted, walls collapsed and advertising hoardings fell down in the storm and heavy downpour in the district on Saturday.

KANNUR: A man died after a wall collapsed on him during heavy rain at Macheri on Saturday. Padijarayil Gangadharan,65, of Thalavil, was walking to his daughter’s home after alighting from a bus when the mishap occurred. Trees were uprooted, walls collapsed and advertising hoardings fell down in the storm and heavy downpour in the district on Saturday. 

A huge hoarding fell on a wall near the Officers’ Club situated opposite the Jawahar stadium, damaging two vehicles, a lottery stall and breaking an electric post. Though it fell on the electric line, the timely intervention of the people who rushed to the spot avoided further damages. A huge teak tree in the compound of the KSEB at Burnasserry was also uprooted in the rain. 

Houses destroyed in Kozhikode
Kozhikode: As many as 23 houses were partially destroyed and another three fully damaged in heavy rain that lashed the district of Saturday. The slab of a house at Kinalur in Thamarassery taluk developed cracks. One person, identified as Raveendran Narapatta was injured after a tree fell over him at Ayancheri. Four houses 
were partially destroyed and one fully damaged in Koyilandi taluk due to heavy rain.
