KOZHIKODE: Bindu Thankam Kalyani, a Dalit activist and a teacher of Medical College Campus Government Higher Secondary School who made an unsuccessful attempt to visit Sree Ayyappa temple at Sabarimala, continue to face threats.

Bindu, 43, who was forced to abandon her journey to the holy shrine following stiff protests at Erumely, returned to Kozhikode with the help of the Muvattupuzha police.

On reaching Kozhikode on Tuesday early morning, she sought refuge at a friend’s flat at Chalapuram as protesters had pelted stones at her rented house at Kovoor near Government Medical College the other day.

However, the situation worsened after the protesters reached her friend’s apartment complex and allegedly showered verbal abuse on her and her friends.

After she sought assistance, police personnel from Kasaba and Vanita police stations reached the apartment around 9.30 am and shifted her to the police station. Later, she went to a friend’s house at an undisclosed location.

“I am in a difficult situation. I have been receiving threats ever since I made public my intention to visit Sabarimala temple. I cannot go to my house or the school,” Bindu told Express.
“A few colleagues had called me and suggested it is better I keep off work for a few days owing to security concerns,” she said.

Protesters had also taken out a march to the school on Monday. A native of  Karukachal in Kottayam district, Bindu has been working at the school here for three years. She said she will file a complaint with the police immediately.
