THIRUVANANTHAPURAM : A day after his reference to former prime minister Indira Gandhi as the “mother of India” created a buzz, Union Minister of State Suresh Gopi clarified on Sunday that he had called her the ‘mother of the Congress party’ in the country but his remarks were misinterpreted by the media.

The actor-politician said he spoke from his heart and asserted that there was nothing wrong in his remarks about Indira Gandhi. Gopi was interacting with the media during a reception hosted for him by the BJP at the party’s state headquarters here on Sunday. The BJP leader asked reporters whether they did not understand the context in which he made the remarks.

“Whether anyone likes it or not, as far as the Congress is concerned, K Karunakaran is the father of the party in Kerala. Similarly in India, its mother is Indira Gandhi,” Suresh Gopi said.

He went on to add that Indira was the real architect of independent India. The Union Minister, who won the Lok Sabha election on a BJP ticket from Thrissur, said Indira’s contributions to the country cannot be ignored just because she belonged to a rival political party.

During a visit to the memorial of former Congress chief minister K Karunakaran in Thrissur on Saturday, Gopi had described Karunakaran as a “courageous administrator”. and Indira Gandhi as the “mother of India”. The BJP leader had also said that he considered Karunakaran and former Left chief minister E K Nayanar his “political gurus”.
