SAMBALPUR: Being one of the main crops in the ensuing kharif season in Sambalpur district, the administration had decided to cultivate paddy over 1,04,520 hectares. Production target has been fixed at 3,13,560 MT, while the paddy yield per hectare has been put at around 30 quintal.

As per reports, paddy production stood at around 2,87,333 MT and 2,88,896 MT in 2007 and 2008 kharif season respectively.

Besides, pulses would be cultivated in over 35,305 hectares with a production target of 18,689 MT and oilseeds in 20,800 hectares with a production target of 13,137 MT.

Maize cultivation would be taken up over 1,075 hectares, millets in 1,100 and ‘jawar’ in just 10 hectares.

Vegetables would be grown over 25,709 hectares and condiments including chilli, ginger and turmeric in 5,880 hectares.

Of the total geographical area of 6,66,293 hectares in the district, cultivable area is 1,93,674 hectares comprising high, medium and low land of 96,535 hectares, 60,759 and 36,380 hectares respectively.

As farmers suffered losses in the last kharif season due to inadequate supply of fertilisers, District Collector P.K. Pattnaik has directed for advance storage of fertilisers by cooperative societies prior to onset of monsoon
