BHUBANESWAR: Criticising the State Government for the deteriorating law and order situation in the State, Opposition Congress members today demanded a white paper on crime in the Assembly before the members take up the discussion on the Home Department budget.
Alleging that in many places in the State there is no rule of law, Santosh Singh Saluja (Cong) said that the Government should inform the members about the prevailing situation before the discussion. Discussion on the demand for grant of the Home Department was taken up in the House today.
His party colleague Mamata Madhi also mentioned about the worsening law and order situation, particularly in the undivided Koraput district.
She criticised the State Government for not taking any action to bring back normalcy to the area.
Naba Kishore Das (Cong) alleged that regional disparity had led to many disturbances in several areas.
Referring to the commission set up by the Government, Das demanded tabling of its report in the House during the session. He requested the Speaker to direct the Government “which is always busy protecting the big industrialists and mine owners.” Amar Prasad Satpathy (NCP) raised questions about the functioning of the State Human Rights Commission. He said that the annual report of 2003-04 was placed in the Assembly today.
He demanded an inquiry by the Speaker on tabling of the report after seven years.
