TALCHER: Work in Hingula mine here, which produces around 35,000 tonne of coal a day, has been hampered for the last two days following an agitation by the people of an affected village.

Inhabitants of Kalamchuin village have blocked the entry point, coal route transport and other key areas of the open cast mine since Monday, affecting the production and dispatch of coal.

They are demanding jobs in lieu of their homestead land acquired by the coal company. On the other hand, MCL authorities said they cannot provide them jobs unless the villagers vacated their lands.

Though a meeting was held at the Angul collectorate to sort out the issue, it failed to dissuade the agitators. Angul Collector Swamy D V and MCL Director S C Padhy, among others, were present at the meeting. Security personnel have been deployed in the area.
