DHENKANAL: A three-year-old elephant calf died in the wee hours today despite hectic efforts of 18 hours to revive it by veterinary surgeons at the Kailash Elephant Rescue Centre. The calf was rescued from the outskirts of Kapilas reserve forest, 15 km from the rescue centre. It was lying on the ground for two days in a bad state and was noticed by villagers yesterday at 10 am. They informed the forest officials who rescued it in a critical

condition.

Veterinary surgeons administered 12 drips and other medicines to the calf on the spot and brought it to the rescue centre. Surgeons again administered four drips with rapid response medicines but the calf did not respond to the medication.

Forest ranger (deer park) Suvendu Bhuyan said the calf suffered from dehydration and had injuries on its legs. Despite all efforts, the calf died early this

morning. Forest officials said the calf was part of a herd in Kapilas reserve forest and had been deserted.
