SONEPUR: The Ikat or Orissan style of tie and dye craft demonstrated by Chaturbhuj Meher won him rave reviews and admiration from international craftsmen and the spectators at the four-day International Handicraft Exhibition ‘Interdecoracao’ held at Porto in Portugal from January 28 to 31.
The veteran tie and dye master craftsman participated in the exhibition at the invitation of Export Promotion Council for Handicrafts. At the exhibition Meher demonstrated a silk wall-hanging -- Sampurna Briksha Bandha. The piece depicting a full grown tree with its boughs and blossoms, roots and leaves had fetched the UNESCO Seal of Craft Excellence for him in 200.
He also demonstrated how Orissan tie and dye, also known as Ikat, is prepared in the most intricate technique of knotting the thread.
