Bank pays for ATM fraud

The District Consumer Forum recently ordered the State Bank of India (SBI) to re-reimburse the fraudulent debit from ATMs.

While hearing petitions of four customers, the forum, under presidentship of Laxminarayan Padhi, ordered the bank to pay the full amount with interest withdrawn from the customers’ savings bank accounts. The Forum also asked the bank to bear the case expenditure of the customers.

Some months ago, four customers of SBI Umerkote Naliniranjan Mishra, Nigam Kumar Sahu, Promad Kumar Swain and Simanchal Patro found that Rs 15,000, Rs  80,000, Rs 15,000 and Rs  35,000 respectively had been withdrawn from their accounts.

Later investigation revealed that their money was withdrawn from ATMs located in Delhi. The customers had lodged complaints with the bank authorities demanding their money back. But when the bank neglected and did not reimburse the stolen money, the customers moved the District Consumer Forum.

Following the order, SBI has reimbursed the stolen money with interest.
