‘Government inaction deprived ryots of insurance’

The OPCC has criticised the State Government for neglecting the farm sector as a result of which farmers failed to get insurance assistance for crop loss during last year’s kharif.

Chairman of the farmers’ cell Amiya Kumar Patnaik said 14 lakh farmers had deposited ` 78 crore insurance premium. They should have received insurance assistance of ` 657 crore for crop loss in last year’s kharif. But because of the inaction of the State Government, many farmers were deprived of insurance assistance.

Though the State Government is claiming that it is working for the betterment of the farm sector, actually farmers are facing problems due to lack of any policy, he said.
