Tension gripped Jeypore on Monday evening over a burial ground which had been in the eye of the storm since long. Security forces have been deployed at the Jeypore mosque areas to restore peace.

Reports said two groups had been at loggerheads claiming rights over a local burial ground near Chandanbad. The town had witnessed similar tension in the past.

On Sunday, the matter was again raised by the two groups on the pretext of Eid celebration and hundreds rushed to the Sub-Collector’s office. Sub-Collector Birendra Karkara pacified the members and convened a peace committee to maintain order.

However, Monday evening saw some tension in the mosque area which escalated after some people pelted stones at a passing vehicle. Even as the district administration officials tried to restore order, the group forcibly closed shops and blocked vehicular traffic at different places in Rajnagar areas.

With the situation turning volatile, armed forces were rushed to the spot.

The Sub-Collector said efforts are on to pacify the agitated members.
