The District and Sessions Judge, Phulbani, Sarat Chandra Mohapatra, on Tuesday sentenced six persons of a family to life imprisonment on charges of murder.
The six, identified as Bishnu Digal, Tipuna Digal, Manda Digal, Chandra Digal, Biswanath Digal and Kandu Digal, of Jiuguda village under Gochapada police limits had assaulted their relatives over a land dispute on March 4, 2010.
Lajuka Digal and his two sons, Binjhaban Digal and Budhadev Digal, were attacked with spears and lathis. Binjhaban was hit on the chest with a spear and died on the spot while others sustained grievous injuries.
Lajuka immediately reported the matter at the Gochapada police station and the police seized the weapon used in the crime.
The judge said it was a pre-planned murder and sentenced them to life. The six have been asked to pay a fine of ` 12,000 and in default will have to undergo imprisonment for another month.
