Woman rescued, one arrested

Police on Wednesday rescued a woman from Pokhariapada village under Pattamundai police limits in the district and arrested one of her kidnappers.

The woman was kidnapped from Puri on Sunday.

The kidnappers had demanded ` 2-lakh ransom for her release, said A Mohapatra, the police officer of Pattamundai police station.

Following a tip-off, police teams from Puri and Kendrapara raided a house in  Pokhariapada early on Wednesday morning.

The kidnappers opened fire on the police and tried to flee. However, police nabbed one of the kidnappers and seized a pistol and eight rounds of live bullets.

The arrested kidnapper, identified as Jyotiranjan Pradhan of Pokhariapada, was produced in the court of Judicial Magistrate First Class (JMFC) in Pattamundai and remanded in judicial custody.

Meanwhile, raids are being conducted to arrest the other two kidnappers, added the police officer.

Koraput: One Jatin Kumar Mahapatra (10), kidnapped two days back, was rescued and brought back home on Wednesday.

Police rescued him from Simhachalam in Andhra Pradesh while he was standing with his abductor P. Pravakar Rao of Visakhapatnam near a temple. Prabhakar was planning to shift the child to a different location.

 According to Jatin, he was kept in a hostel with other children and was given food and a new shirt.

Koraput SDPO Niranjan Rout said the child was kidnapped over a family dispute.

The driver of the taxi in which the child was abducted has been arrested while others involved in the kidnapping are being interrogated, he added.
