Rajya Sabha member and national secretary of BJP Dharmendra Pradhan on Sunday demanded higher compensation for the family of the victims of  the Kuluda mishap in Sudargarh district.

The tragedy could have been averted had the State Government and the MCL authorities followed the mining norms, Pradhan said after visiting the spot.

Though 11 bodies have been recovered, villagers claim that 25 more, mostly women, are still under the debris, he said adding no senior officer of State Government or MCL visited the spot. Even after 26 years of operation of the open cast mine, the affected villagers are yet to get the benefits of compensation, rehabilitation and employment, he said and demanded a compensation of ` 25 lakh to each of the victim’s family.

Meanwhile, the State Government and MCL has announced a compensation of ` two lakh and ` three lakh respectively to each bereaved family.
