Indigenous people day celebration at CU

The Central University at Koraput celebrated the International Day of the World’s Indigenous Peoples recently. The focus for this year was “Indigenous Media, Empowering Indigenous Voices”.

The university adopted themes such as media coverage of indigenous issues, traditional knowledge as well as culture and heritage.

Director, Regional Centre, IGNOU Koraput Abhilas Nayak, chief guest of the event, spoke about uniqueness of indigenous language and culture of the indigenous community. He called for research and survey to identify their unique cultural traditions and social problems.

He cautioned that by the end of this century, 90 per cent of indigenous languages will be extinct because of the rapid growth of mass media and telecommunication.

Media needs to capture the right issues at the right time, the Director further said.

Staff of the university were present on the occasion .
