A 25-year-old pharmaceutical science student was murdered in the busy Chintamaniswar area of the City on Monday evening after he tried to mediate with a group of people who had allegedly manhandled his friend.

Manmohan Pradhan, a second year MPharma student of Jayadev College of Pharmaceutical Sciences at Naharkanta, was stabbed in the chest. He was rushed to Capital Hospital where he was received dead.

The group, which murder him, comprised eight people, police said. They fled immediately after the incident which occurred at about 7.30 pm. No one has been arrested yet.Police Commissioner RP Sharma rushed to the area and took stock of the investigation initiated by Laxmi Sagar police.

Investigation revealed that Manmohan had come to Chintamaniswar to help settle a misunderstanding between his friend Laxmi Narayan Rout and the group. However, the accused persons mistook him for a bully and started to abuse Laxmi for bringing him into the scene.

When Manmohan mediated, he was assaulted and stabbed though it is yet to be ascertained if an iron rod or a sharp weapon was used. The weapon pierced through the right side of his chest. He succumbed on his way to the hospital, police said.

Laxmi Narayan, police said, had rented a house at one Premananda Parida’s plot in Chintamaniswar. The plot was shared by the group. Most of them reportedly worked for a builder. A few days earlier, the landlord had asked the group to vacate on the ground that they indulged in boozing and creating nuisance.

The accused persons were under the impression that it was Laxmi Narayan who had complained to Parida and took him to task. When Manmohan came to know about the matter, he wanted to talk it out with the group and settle the issue but the 25-year-old had no inkling that he would pay with his life.

The deceased, police said, was a resident of Delanga area of Puri district. A case has been registered and squads have been formed to go after the accused.

This is the second murder in the Capital in a week. On August 12, Krushna Chandra Nayak, a builder, was gunned down in IRC Village area of the City.
