A 32-year-old man killed his wife and two minor children in a row, in Dhobeigada village under Rajnagar police limits on Sunday . The deceased are Ritarani (28), her daughters Kandehi (4) and Kuni (1).

The accused, Nirmal Rout, had been inflicting mental and physical torture on Ritarani since she gave birth to Kuni last year.

The fight between the husband and wife turned brutal on Sunday night following which Nirmal drowned his wife and two children in a nearby pond with the help of his brothers Ratnakar Rout and Bulu Rout. Later, they fished out the body of the woman and hanged her in a room of Nirmal's house. Locals found the bodies of two children floating in the pond on Monday morning and informed police.

Pattamundai SDPO Ramachandra Gouda said while Nirmal is absconding, Ratnakar and Bulu have been apprehended from Bausagada. Irked over the gruesome incident, villagers caught hold of the two and beat them up before handing them over to police.

During interrogation, the duo told police that Nirmal was unhappy as Ritarani gave birth to two daughters. He had wanted a son.

Ritarani's father Rabinarayan Jena told the police that Nirmal used to frequently fight with his daughter after she gave birth to Kuni last year. "Last month, Nirmal and his family members had also demanded us to pay `50,000 as additional dowry to start a new business," he said.

Police have seized the bodies and sent them to the district headquarters hospital for post-mortem.
