The teacher in-charge of mid-day meals (MDM) in TRW School at Girishchandrapur in Naktideul block here was suspended by District Collector on charges of dereliction of duty on Monday. The decision comes a day after Banita Kanhar, a Class III student of the school, succumbed to burn injuries that she had sustained by accidentally falling into a tub containing hot egg curry prepared to be served with mid-day meals. The incident took place on Saturday.

District Welfare Officer Krupasindhu Behera and Nodal Officer of the MDM scheme (Rairakhol sub-division) AK Pradhan probed into the incident and submitted report to Collector Balwant Singh. Sources said the Collector has also recommended to the Director of Mass Education to initiate proceedings against the headmaster of the school.

According to reports, students had queued up outside the school’s kitchen for their mid-day meal on Saturday. Since egg curry was cooked, enthusiastic students jostled to get their share and in the melee, Banita fell into the tub containing hot curry.

With 60 per cent burn injuries she was rushed to Girishchandrapur PHC. The doctors of PHC referred her to VSS Medical at Burla. She was later shifted to SCB Medical in Cuttack where she succumbed in the wee hours of Sunday.

As the news of her death reached the village, locals blocked Kisinda-Godhidhip road demanding compensation for her family.
