Demand for shifting High Court to capital city

Even as the State Government grapples with the agitation over establishment of High Court benches across several districts, problems seem to be mounting with the lawyers of the Capital city demanding shifting of the High Court to Bhubaneswar.

Lawyers of the Bhubaneswar Bar Association blocked the Cuttack-Puri road in front of Bhubaneswar Sessions Court on Thursday for several hours, disrupting traffic on the busy route. More than 200 lawyers took part in the road blockade and burnt tyres.

Bhubaneswar Bar Association secretary Prasanna Kumar Parida said since majority of the States have established the High Court in State Capital, it should be shifted here also. Move in this direction had been made when late Biju Patnaik was the Chief Minister, Parida added. The lawyers boycotted the court for the day and held a meeting on Thursday evening.

They have decided to wait for the response of Chief minister Naveen Patnaik before taking any further action.
