West Bengal couple held for defrauding Rs 200 crore

A Kolkata Police team on Friday arrested a couple of West Bengal on charges of running an illegal chit fund company and duping investors to the tune of Rs 200 crore.

 The couple __ Achinta Mahato and Susmita Mahato __ had fled West Bengal and have been staying, almost incognito, in the City for the last two years.

 A seven-member team of Kolkata Police, led by CID Inspector Debabrata Dutta, sought help from the City Police. A team of Lingaraj Police and Special Squad raided Pushpanjali Apartments where the two were living and arrested them.

 According to Lingaraj Police Station IIC Rajendra Mandal, the couple were running a company under the name Sri Sai Marketing Private Ltd which is alleged to have duped investors to the tune of `200 crore. A case was lodged with Purulia Police Station in this connection and later the CID had taken up the investigation.

 While the Kolkata Police has been on the lookout for the couple for long, they tracked them down here recently. After their arrest, the Mahato couple was produced before the Sub-Divisional Judicial Magistrate’s Court. The Kolkata team is likely to take them on transit remand on July 10.

 Mandal said the couple had not run any financial operation in the State.
