Lawyer assault case: HC orders judicial probe

The Orissa High Court on Friday directed a judicial enquiry into the alleged police assault on a practising lawyer at Bidanasi on February 20.

A Division Bench comprising Justice I Mohanty and Justice R Dash appointed retired district judge Chakradhar Kar to head the Enquiry Commission.

Earlier, acting on a writ petition filed by Civil Court Bar Association seeking judicial inquiry into the incident, the High Court has directed the State counsel to take instructions from the Government on the issue. Allegedly, lawyer, Nayan Kishore Biswal, was assaulted by Bidanasi police on the night of February 20 when he had gone to the police station to lodge a complaint in connection with a land dispute.

The incident had led to a lawyers’ strike, paralysing the courts in the city including the Orissa High Court till March 5. The lawyers had joined work from March 6 after the High Court admitted the petition.
