Long wait for land

It has been 15 years since landless tribals of Ganjam district got documents for homestead land. Land, however, is yet to be provided to them.

With an aim to rehabilitate landless tribals in Turubudi panchayat under Patrapur block, district administration had decided to provide them homestead land in plain areas. The motto was also to desist them from shifting cultivation.

Although some tribal families have received lands, many are yet to get them. The deprived families include 19 of Kampakumujhari and 31 of Kantakumujhari hamlets in Patrapur block. They were provided documents for the land on plot no 135 on the side of Bahuda-Baghajhari irrigation project in 1998. But till date, no land has been provided to them.

Ironically, the documents provided to them state that lands allotted to them are not transferable for a period of 10 years.

Block officials said the land that was to be allotted to them is disputed.

“The Revenue Department has been apprised of the matter and requested for identification of new land for them. Once we receive the government orders, land would be provided to them,” said an official, requesting anonymity.
