Three children hurt as detonator goes off in school hostel

Three children of a residential school were injured when a detonator exploded in their hostel on Monday night. The detonator was to be used for stone blasting.

Three children of a residential school were injured when a detonator exploded in their hostel on Monday night. The detonator was to be used for stone blasting.

The hostel is located at Bodigam village under Dabugain block. At around 1 am, 11-year-old Ranjit Santa tried to connect a detonator with pencil batteries unaware of the fact that it was an explosive.

The detonator exploded in which, along with Ranjit, seven-year-old Liupun Bhotra and nine-year-old Binaya Panaka were injured.

Headmaster of the school Shyam Sundar Choudhary rushed to the spot and admitted the three to Dabugam community health centre. Condition of Ranjit is stated to be serious.

Police visited the hostel on Tuesday and recovered some batteries from the spot. Meanwhile, school authorities are yet to find out how the detonator was found in the hostel.
