NHRC to probe killing of Maoist leader

A three-member team of the National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) arrived here on Thursday to inquire into killing of Maoist area commander Sameer Xalxo (35) during an encounter with security forces in 2011.

Sameer was shot dead on February 7 night in 2011 in a forest area on Odisha-Jharkhand border under Chandiposh police limits. Rourkela police had claimed that he was gunned down following an exchange of fire between police and Maoists.

The NHRC team comprising members KCS Rao, Ravi Singh and Nitin Kumar would conduct spot inquiry and visit various areas on Odisha-Jharkhand border from May 24 to 27.

They would interact with villagers and police personnel to ascertain the circumstances that led to the killing.
