An academician’s role is not confined to imparting education. He should also inspire students to indulge in constructive work, said Chancellor of universities and Governor SC Jamir.
He was here to attend the 48th foundation day of the Berhampur University on Thursday. He called upon the academicians to give a helping hand to the University for promotion of higher education and help students from poor families.
Jamir asked teachers and students of Berhampur University to take a new year’s pledge to make it one of the best educational institutes in the country. “The resolution for making Berhampur University the finest university is necessary as not a single university in the country has got a place among the best 200 universities in the world,” Jamir said.
Stating that most universities in the country were lagging behind in quality, he said he wanted a university in the State to become a role-model for others.
“We have sufficient potentials, but we lack determination to reach the goal. Commitment of the teachers, discipline among the students and ideal academic environment on the campus are needed to achieve the goal,” he said.
Vice-Chancellor Deepak Behera presided over the function. On the occasion, writer Amiyabala Patnaik was felicitated by the Governor. Prizes were distributed among students who had excelled in various streams and won in competitions held to mark the occasion.
The Governor also inaugurated a central conference hall and a new academic block of the University. The conference hall and academic block were constructed with the 12th Plan funds of the University Grants Commission.
Jamir also released ‘Bhanja Vihar Reporter’, a publication by Journalism and Mass Communication Department of the University. Later in the day, the Governor distributed five auto-rickshaws to five SHGs who are operating in the vicinity of the University.
