SAMBALPUR: Tension ran high on the premises of Shyam Metalics here when locals ransacked a part of the plant protesting death of a contractual worker on Wednesday.

The worker, Rabindra Sahu of Basupali village in Rengali block, was allegedly beaten to death by the private security guards in the plant after he was caught with iron rods that were stolen from the plant earlier.

An injured Sahu was rushed to the VSS Medical at Burla where doctors declared him brought dead.

As the news spread, locals also blocked the State Highway-10 connecting Sambalpur with Rourkela for three hours demanding compensation for the family of the deceased and action against the errant security guards at the earliest.

The agitators were pacified after police and Rengali Tehsildar, Susama Bilung, rushed to the spot and assured to look into their demands.
