BHUBANESWAR: After eluding security forces for more than a decade and a half, dreaded Maoist Sabyasachi Panda was arrested by police from a hideout in Berhampur in Odisha in a midnight operation on Thursday.

Based on intelligence inputs, a team raided Bada Bazar area in the city where he was found holed up in a house with half a kilogram of gold, `2 lakh in cash and a revolver.

Announcing his arrest in the State Assembly, Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik said it was a big achievement for the Odisha Police.

He was active in the Maoist movement in the State for more than two decades and was the guiding spirit behind the formation of the Chasi Mulia Samiti and Kui Lawwenga Sangha in Rayagada and Gajapati districts.
