BHUBANESWAR: Minister of State for Transport Ramesh Chandra Majhi informed the House on Saturday that 18,929 persons have died in road accidents in Odisha from 2009 to 2013.
In a written reply to a question from KV Singhdeo (BJP), the Minister said the highest number of 4,062 casualties was reported in 2013 followed by 3,837 in 2010.
The casualty figures in 2009, 2011 and 2012 stood at 3,527, 3,802 and 3,701 respectively, he said.
The Minister said the State Government has adopted a number of programmes to create awareness among the people on road safety.
Workshops and seminars have been organised at both the district and state level, Majhi said. To create awareness on road safety among school children, slogan competitions have been organised in selected schools.
Besides, road safety clubs have been formed in educational institutions near the national highways and state highways to sensitise the students as well as the public regarding road safety, he said.
